ABSTRACT

Abstract Chaetoglobosin A is an antibacterial compound produced by Chaetomium globosum, with potential application as a biopesticide and cancer treatment drug. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing cornstalks to produce chaetoglobosin A by C. globosum W7 in solid-batch fermentation and to determine an optimal method for purification of the products. The output of chaetoglobosin A from the cornstalks was 0.34 mg/g, and its content in the crude extract was 4.80%. Purification conditions were optimized to increase the content of chaetoglobosin A in the crude extract, including the extract solvent, temperature, and pH value. The optimum process conditions were found to be acetone as the extractant, under room temperature, and at a pH value of 13. Under these conditions, a production process of the antifungal chaetoglobosin A was established, and the content reached 19.17%. Through further verification, cornstalks could replace crops for the production of chaetoglobosin A using this new production process. Moreover, the purified products showed great inhibition against Rhizoctonia solani, with chaetoglobosin A confirmed as the main effective constituent (IC50 = 3.88 µg/mL). Collectively, these results demonstrate the feasibility of using cornstalks to synthesize chaetoglobosin A and that the production process established in this study was effective.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cleanroom air is extremely dry, as it is maintained within 1 % of relative humidity. Few studies have assessed the dermatologic life quality of workers in ultralow-humidity environments. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the dermatologic life quality of cleanroom workers using the Skindex-29, compared to those of non-cleanroom workers. METHODS: Study participants were 501 cleanroom workers and 157 non-cleanroom workers from a secondary battery factory, who underwent an employee health examination at a single university hospital from September 2014 to September 2015. Results of the self-administered Skindex-29, and McMonnies questionnaire were analyzed. Other information and disease history were also collected during physician's medical examination. Descriptive and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed. RESULTS: The Skindex-29 score was significantly higher in cleanroom workers than in non-cleanroom workers for all domains, Symptom (16.0 ± 15.9 vs. 6.3 ± 10.2, p < 0.001), Emotion (11.3 ± 17.4 vs. 2.5 ± 7.4, p < 0.001), Function (5.2 ± 11.1 vs. 1.6 ± 4.0, p < 0.001), and Overall (10.8 ± 13.4 vs. 3.5 ± 6.2, p < 0.001). The Skindex-29 score of cleanroom workers was similar to that of patients with skin diseases such as psoriasis, other dermatitis, corns, alopecia etc. Among the cleanroom workers, 37 workers had one or more skin diseases. Among the risk factors, ‘working at cleanroom’, ‘possessing skin disease’ and ‘McMonnies score’ had significant strong correlations with Skindex-29 score, meanwhile age, sex, smoking, drinking and exercise had weak correlations with it.‘Working at cleanroom’ and ‘possessing skin disease’ had highest odds ratios with overall 14.0 (C.I.: 5.9–33.1) and 13.4 (C.I.: 4.5–29.2), and the lowest odds ratios with function domain 3.5(C.I.: 1.7–7.1) and 4.5(C.I.: 2.1–9.5), respectively. The McMonnies score had the highest odds ratio with overall, 6.9(C.I.: 4.5–10.8) and lowest odd ratio with emotion domain 4.2 (C.I.: 2.7–6.4). CONCLUSIONS: Dermatologic life quality among cleanroom workers in the secondary battery factory is shown to be lower than that among non-cleanroom workers in this study. The study suggests that the Skindex-29 may provide helpful information on the dermatologic life quality of cleanroom workers. Therefore, regarding evaluation of dermatologic life quality using Skindex-29, preventive care is necessary for cleanroom workers in ultralow humidity environment.

ABSTRACT

Vohwinkel syndrome, also known as hereditary mutilating keratoderma, is a rare palmoplantar keratoderma that manifests in childhood and becomes more evident in adolescence and adulthood. This preferential autosomal dominant disease affects more women and Caucasians. Its clinical features are diffuse palmoplantar keratoderma with the appearance of honeycomblike constricting rings in the fingers and toes known as pseudo-ainhum, and starfish-shaped keratotic plaques on the dorsal aspect of the hands and feet that can affect the elbows and knees. The present report describes a case report of a patient with Vohwinkel syndrome and surgical correction of the constrictive bands.

ABSTRACT

Mastitis consistis one of the main problems of milk production, mainly due to the production losses and the rising cost of milk. In case of severe hyperkeratosis, the teat canal can become an easier barrier for the bacteria to penetrate. The objeSctive of this study was to assess a phototherapy device construct with LED light for prevention and treatment of teat hyperkeratosis in a dairy cattle herd with high prevalence (35.3 percent of severe cases). 60 primiparous cows were used in the preventive experiment and 30 cows with hyperkeratosis were used in the therapeutic experiment. In both experiments, half of the cows started to be treated in early lactation using the phototherapy device three times per week for 6 weeks. The other cows were the controls. Hyperkeratosis was assessed by scoring and by morphometric analyses of teat images that were taken at baseline and then weekly for 6 consecutive weeks. In the preventive experiment, more images were taken later, between 6 and 7 months of the first lactation. Somatic cell counts (SCC) were performed monthly. In the preventive experiment, the outer diameter of the teat lesions remained constant in the treated group, whereas cows of the control group showed a significant increase at the end of lactation. In the therapeutic groups, no statistical differences for teat hyperkeratosis variables were seen between groups. However, the incidence of subclinical mastitis (SCC > 250 cells/mL) during lactation was lower in the treated group (P<0.05). In conclusion the phototherapy protocol did not prevent the development in primiparous or ameliorate previous hyperkeratosis lesions in cows. However, the prototype was considered useful as an adjunct in preventing the increase in the size of teat hyperkeratosis lesions and also as a way to reduce subclinical mastitis incidence in affected dairy cows.

ABSTRACT

Background: Macrolides are prescribed in the treatment of pityriasis rosea despite conflicting results of the limited number of studies evaluating their role in its treatment. Aim: A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of azithromycin on the clinical course of pityriasis rosea. Methods: Seventy patients of pityriasis rosea were given either azithromycin (n = 35) or placebo (n = 35) and were followed-up at 2, 4 and 6 weeks. Pruritus was assessed in both groups using the visual analogue scale (VAS) . Change in the pityriasis rosea severity score (PRSS) and in the VAS were recorded as outcome measures and were compared statistically. Results: The decrease in PRSS from baseline through 2, 4 and 6 weeks within both treatment (P < 0.001) and placebo (P < 0.001) arms was found to be statistically significant; however, this change was not significantly different in the two groups (P = 0.179). Similarly, the decrease in VAS was found to be statistically significant within both groups (P < 0.001); however, the change was comparable between the two groups (P < 0.937). Analysis by Fisher's exact test did not find a significant difference between the two groups for PRSS and VAS. Conclusion: Azithromycin is not effective in pityriasis rosea and the use of macrolides for this disease should not be encouraged in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Outcome of wearing high heel shoes in young generation: A Cross Sectional Study. Introduction/ High heels increase the heel height, thus increasing the pressure under the metatarsal head in forefoot, they push the center of mass of the body forward taking the hips and spine out of alignment moreover the altered posture of walking 1-5 in high heels places excessive forces on the inside of the knee joint. All these factors contribute in causing deleterious pathologic deformities. The studies carried out previously were more focused on the adult population furthermore there isn't much work done to investigate the effect of heels in Pakistan therefore, this was a non-invasive study the purpose of which was to evaluate these complications particularly targeting the medical students of medical colleges, Karachi. A total of 220 respondents aged between 15 to 25 years were selected as potential respondents meeting the criteria for selection. A convenience based randomized sampling method was adopted, where the participants were required to fill questionnaires and give their demographic details. They were inquired about the presence of any co morbidities which was an essential part of the exclusion criteria. They were also inquired about their usage of high heel shoes, their size, duration and frequency of usage, and if they had been causing any complications such as bunions, heel spur, callosities or pain in soles, calf or back. The data obtained was analyzed through SPSS and the graphs of frequency for all the complications were computed. After analyzing the 220 participants it was found that 7.7% were males while 92.3% were females, and 61.8% were found to be within 21 to 23 years of age. After the analyses of data for the complications it was found that out of the total participants 18.8% experience foot swelling, 19.4% blisters, 16.4% foot numbness, 12.3% foot callosities, 2.8% heel spur, and 3.7% experience bunions. From this study conducted on the students of medical college it was found that wearing high heel shoes is not associated with any significant complications among most of the students

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiographic results of symptomatic bunionette treated with a diaphyseal oblique osteotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 12 feet of nine patients diagnosed as symptomatic bunionette and treated with diaphyseal oblique osteotomy. All patients were female and the average age at the time of surgery was 48 years. We checked the foot standing anteroposterior, oblique, and lateral images pre- and post-operatively. We measured the fourth intermetatarsal angle and fifth metatarsophalangeal angle and evaluated the clinical results using the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) lesser metatarsophalangeal-interphalangeal (MTP-IP) scale preoperatively and six months postoperatively. RESULTS: Of the nine patients, hallux valgus was combined with symptomatic bunionette in seven feet of five patients. In all of our cases, the average AOFAS lesser MTP-IP scale showed improvement after surgery. Painful callosity around the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint disappeared after surgery in all of our cases. The fourth intermetatarsal angle improved from 12.7degrees to 3.1degrees and the fifth metatarsophalangeal angle improved from 16.6degrees to 2.3degrees. CONCLUSION: Diaphyseal oblique osteotomy of the fifth metatarsal appears to be a safe and satisfactory surgical procedure for treatment of symptomatic bunionette.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Eccrine angiomatous hamartoma (EAH) is a rare benign nodular lesion characterized by the proliferation of eccrine and vascular structures, generally capillaries, in the middle and deep dermis. It may be congenital or appear later in childhood, but rarely arises in adulthood. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathologic features of EAH in Korean patients. METHODS: Ten cases of EAH diagnosed at Ajou University Hospital and Gangnam Severance Hospital in Korea from 2007 to 2010 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: The age range of patients was between 5 and 66 years with an equal number of male and female patients. Apart from two congenital cases, the onset was late, ranging from 6 months to 65 years of age. All lesions were solitary and located on the distal extremities. Nine cases appeared as a yellow-brown nodule or plaque resembling a callus. Neither hyperhidrosis nor hypertrichosis was documented. Apart from the typical histological findings of EAH, prominent mucin deposition, fat component and nerve infiltration were observed. CONCLUSION: This is one of the largest single case series of EAH in the literature. Clinically, resemblance to callosities and the frequent occurrence in the adulthood were the unique features in our series.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Epidermal cysts seldom arise on the palm or sole because of the absence of pilosebaceous apparatus in palmoplantar skin. Palmoplantar epidermal cysts (PPECs) are not included in this location's tumor category, because they appear as slightly elevated, hardly movable dermal or subcutaneous nodules without a central punctum, unlike other epidermal cysts. As a result, PPECs often mimic corns, calluses, or verruca. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to review the clinical features of PPECs and to explore the usefulness of ultrasonography as a diagnostic tool. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and ultrasonographic findings of 31 patients with PPECs among 341 patients with a confirmed epidermal cyst. Among them, 12 patients were evaluated preoperatively by ultrasonography. The data were compared between the ultrasonographic diagnosis and the final diagnosis. RESULTS: Unlike previous reports, PPECs were relatively common, and comprised 9.1% (31/341) of all epidermal cysts. They also appeared more on the sole than on the palm. In addition, PPECs were confused with corns, calluses, and other benign tumors at the first visit, because of their different clinical features from ordinary epidermal cysts. However, preoperative ultrasonography of 12 cases enabled us to make a correct diagnosis. After the operation, no recurrence was found at the last follow-up in any of the patients. CONCLUSION: PPECs have some different clinical features compared to typical epidermal cysts with a non- palmoplantar location. Therefore, it is often difficult to distinguish PPECs from other benign tumorous conditions. However, ultrasonography was useful for the preoperative diagnosis of PPECs because of its safety, low cost, non-invasiveness and, most importantly, its accuracy.

ABSTRACT

The rapid rise in the incidence of obesity has emerged as one of the most pressing global public health issues in recent years. The underlying etiological causes of obesity, whether behavioral, environmental, genetic, or a combination of several of them, have not been completely elucidated. The obesity epidemic has been attributed to the ready availability, abundance, and overconsumption of high-energy content food. We determined here by Pearson's correlation the relationship between food type consumption and rising obesity using the loss-adjusted food availability data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Services (ERS) as well as the obesity prevalence data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Our analysis showed that total calorie intake and consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) did not correlate with rising obesity trends. Intake of other major food types, including chicken, dairy fats, salad and cooking oils, and cheese also did not correlate with obesity trends. However, our results surprisingly revealed that consumption of corn products correlated with rising obesity and was independent of gender and race/ethnicity among population dynamics in the U.S. Therefore, we were able to demonstrate a novel link between the consumption of corn products and rising obesity trends that has not been previously attributed to the obesity epidemic. This correlation coincides with the introduction of bioengineered corns into the human food chain, thus raising a new hypothesis that should be tested in molecular and animal models of obesity.

ABSTRACT

Secondary metabolites are essentially produced and extracted from plants grown in the field under influence of seasonal variations. The use of biotechnological techniques is an alternative resource for drug production. Among these techniques, tissue culture through callus genesis is highlighted, since callus growth is desirable to induce somaclonal variation and physiological studies, especially when the presence of secondary metabolites can be related to cell growth. The aim of this work was to establish a protocol for Cissus sicyoides L. callus genesis from leaf segments in order to produce metabolites in vitro. Thus, leaf segments removed from adult plants grown in the field were used as explants. After disinfestation, the material was inoculated into MT medium + 1.0 mg L-1 NAA and kept in a BOD chamber, with controlled temperature and luminosity. After 30 days, the percentage of surviving explants and the percentage of contamination were evaluated. For culture, MT medium + 1.0 mg L-1 NAA was used, varying BAP concentrations: 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 and 12.0 mg L-1. In the cultivation, the number of compact and friable calluses was counted. For the first and second subculture, the material was introduced into MT medium + 1.0 mg L-1 NAA, varying the same BAP concentrations; the number of friable calluses formed and the size of callus mass were described. The number of replicates formed during subcultures, and fresh and dry matter (g) were also obtained. Then, phytochemical tests were done in order to identify some compounds. The adopted time and concentration of sodium hypochlorite proved to be inefficient for disinfestation. For Cissus sicyoides L. callus genesis from leaf segments, the addition of 6.0 mg L-1 BAP to the culture medium is needed. Cardiotonic heterosides were detected in Cissus sicyoides L. calluses.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Painful plantar callosities under the second, third or fourth metatarsal head have been controverted about its treatment mordalities. We performed the vertical chevron osteotomy in patients with painful callosities on the second and third metatarsal head, and evaluated the outcome clinically. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen cases from 10 patients who had plantar keratosis were operated by vertical chevron osteotomy from March 2005 to October 2008. We used K-wire fixation for all cases. We evaluated the clinical results by the patients' satisfaction and disappearance of plantar lesion. RESULTS: The plantar keratosis was completely disappeared in 8 cases and partially in 5 cases. In 2 cases, patients expresses their pain caused by constant metatarsalgia that was suspected to be dorsal incisional pain and joint capsulitis. Transmetatarsalgia was not appeared. CONCLUSION: We consider vertical chevron osteotomy as a good surgical method for treatment of plantar keratosis.

ABSTRACT

Recent advances in the genetic therapy field like development of short inhibitory RNA (RNAsi) capable of silencing mutant dominant alleles, offer new expectations for treatment of plantar keratoderma in patients with pachyonichya congenita. We briefly review clinical features of this entity and describe a fase 1 study that showed promising results that may be usefull for the whole monogenic diseases field.

ABSTRACT

In general, the operative treatment of the brachymetatarsia is the lengthening of the affected metatarsal bone due to the cosmetic problem rather than the functional one. We experienced 22 year-old female bilateral congenital foot deformities such as hallux varus and 1,4th brachymetatarsia treated with reverse Scarf osteotomy on the hallux varus and massive axial metatarsal shortening Weil osteotomy on the 2,3,5th metatarsals which could reconstruct the normal metatarsal parabola.

ABSTRACT

Participation in athletic activities is associated with a variety of skin problems. We aimed to precise the most important sports related dermatoses in athletes. We conducted transversal study on 30 athletes of 2 teams: one of soccer's and the other of basketball players. For each athlete dermatological exam was practiced. 18 soccer players and 12 basketball players were enrolled; the mean age was about 25.3 years [18-35 years]. The results suggest that athletic activity seems to be a predisposing factor for cutaneous infections [87%] especially fungal infections [90%]. Traumatic lesions were also frequent in our athletes [20/30], dominated by calluses and nail disorders [80%]. Sports-related dermatoses include infections, traumatic entities, allergic contact dermatitis, environmental encounters, exacerbation of preexisting dermatoses, thus regular dermatological screening of athletes is critical for rapid identification and treatment of dermatoses distrusting sport performance

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The authors intended to evaluate the results of symptomatic bunionette treated with a diaphyseal oblique osteotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine patients were followed for more than 1 year after diaphyseal oblique osteotomy for a bunionette deformity with plantar callosity. The mean age was 43 years (23-69 years), and the mean follow-up period was 27 months (12-70 months). As a combined disorder, 7 patients had hallux valgus, for which 3 distal metatarsal oteotomies, 3 proximal osteotomies, and 1 double osteotomy were performed. Clinically, preoperative and postoperative AOFAS MP-IP scale, patient's satisfaction, postoperative complications were analyzed. Radiologically, the 4th intermetatarsal angle and the 5th metatarso-phalangeal angle were analyzed. RESULTS: Clinically, AOFAS MP-IP scale was increased from 59 points preoperatively to 93 points postoperatively, and all patients were satisfied with the results. The plantar callosity had all disappeared at the final follow up. The 4th intermetatarsal angle was decreased from 12.6degrees preoperatively to 4.3degrees postoperatively, and the 5th metatarso- phalangeal angle was decreased from 21.9degrees preoperatively to 2.4degrees postoperatively. There were no significant postoperative complications. CONCLUSION: Diaphyseal oblique osteotomy of the 5th metatarsal appears to be safe and satisfactory procedure for the treatment of a symptomatic bunionette with plantar callosity.

ABSTRACT

The leaves from Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni (Asteraceae) contain diterpenoid glycosides (GDS), which are almost 300 times sweeter than sucrose at 4%. The subject of this study was to evaluate the callus-formation from in vivo and in vitro leaves of Stevia rebaudiana in two already described in literature: Murashige and Skoog (MS) supplemented with 3 mg L-1 of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D); MS supplemented with 1 mg L-1 of naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 0.5 mg L-1 of 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BAP) and other developed in our laboratory the Woody Plant Medium (WPM) with 6 mg L-1 of NAA and 4 mg L-1 of Kinetin (KIN). The explants obtained in vitro initiated callus formation faster than leaves from natural plants. The utilization of WPM nutrients, associated with an adequate combination of phytoregulators, provided greater callus induction velocity and multiplication than the media that using MS nutrients. New experiments will be conducted after reaching genetic stability of the calluses, seeking to evaluate the capacity of these calluses to biosynthesize GDS
